The ring ouzel regularly returns to Upper Swaledale. They nest on or close to the ground and in rocky crevices. Our heather moorland, ancient dry stone walls and abandoned tumbling buildings suit them well. The ring ouzel is on the red conservation list. Upper Swaledale is good place to observe them.
The meadow pipit can be seen on the edges of the moorland and in the pastures. This delightful shy, little songbird is quick of flight and spellingbinding to watch.
