There are many areas in Upper Swaledale that are Dark Sky friendly and if you are staying with us when the Northern Lights are forecast to put in an appearance then jump in your car after dark and drive up onto the high moors above Hillcrest Cottage and sit and wait.

Swith off your headlights and give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness. If you have night mode on your phone put it on this setting. The colours are greatly enhanced through the cameral lens but on this occasion I was lucky enough to see the pink colours and the streaks with my own eyes but not the greens.

I have been waiting for years for this moment. Clear skies, little or no moonlight and storms from the sun hitting our atmosphere at a sensible time of night! I hope you too are lucky enough to see them.
